I remember walking downstairs to take my bedridden grandmother a piece os toast with honey on it. I must have been either 3 or 4, which is when my grandparents lived with us. (She had a massive stroke shortly before I was born, from which she never recovered. She died when I was 5.) Anyway, I remember feeling important that I was doing something for my grandmother. This is really my only memory of her, other than at the funeral home.

Would have to be being a flower girl in a friend’s wedding.
I love these books.

next to the giving tree this is a great book

We lived with my great-aunt who was 75 years old when I was born. She used to still work in Findlay Market which was an open-air produce section downtown. I can still remember helping her lug back fruits & vegetables in her hand-made leather sacks……45 years before “going green” became popular.

I’ve posted this on Win A Book. No need to enter.

surgery and was less than 1 yr old old maybe it was the pain but things happened

I remember when there was no money for Christmas presents so we made them. The best Christmas ever.

I remember when I was 6 and in first grade; I had long pigtails and at that time we had desks with ink wells. The boy that sat behind me put my pigtails in the inkwell. My mother thought it was funny when I got home but she called the boy’s mother and he did not do it again because the teacher moved his seat.

I remember having my head stuck between the bars on my crib. I remember crying and my dad being mad when he came in to get me out. I still have my crib (would never use it for safety reasons) and have no idea how I ever got my head between those bars. I am guessing I was less than 2?

what a great blog. Ah the drama of it all. i love it i love it

I remember bits and pieces from around 3 and 4. Around five is when the more vivid memories start. Staying at my grandparents house. In the upstairs that used to be my dad’s and aunts rooms. Later they were rented out. There are some memories of gifts I got at christmas. Thank you for the giveaway.

My earliest clear childhood memory is when I was about 5, I think. My younger sister (who was always into everything), stuck a cinnamon tic tac up her nose and it got stuck! I was in the yard and my parents ran by me on the way to the car to take her to the emergency room yelling for me to go to the neighbors!!! That was the start of my sister’s relationship with the ER. LOL

My earliest memory is of my mother singing “Little Ducky Duddle” to me at bedtime. I don’t know how old I was but I thought it was a special moment between us. Now I sing it to my husband sometimes! (He thinks it’s a special sign of my lack of sanity.)

I remember when I was three, my Mom and Dad brought my brother home from the hospital and a baby doll for me…I scribbled all over that doll with a crayon. I was no longer the only child.
I loved this book and would love to have a copy!
Thanks for the opportunity!

When I was 3, my dad was holding me outside at a gas station, we were having a full blown conversation and I was very small. This woman walks up to us and exclaims “she can talk?!?!” and I looked at her and said “i’m not a dog” My dad thought that was so funny, he never forgot it.

I remember poking my brother in the eye with a Barbie doll and how we had to go to the hospital because of it!

I remember being 5 years old and chasing the dog around the house. I jammed my knee into a nail sticking out of the wall, and I had to get stitches. I remember blood staining my sock, and that’s about it.. I must have blocked out the stitches part because it hurt so much! 😦 I also remember being little and a relative couldn’t come to my birthday party, and I commented that I didn’t want her there because she was fat; my mom really chewed me out. I learned about tact that day. I still feel bad. 😦 Thank you so much for offering this giveaway! eyeslikesugar [at] gmail [dot] com

My earliest memory is falling through a hole in the porch railing. I don’t know how old I was. I do know it knocked me out, and gave me a pretty bad headache. Please enter me in this giveaway. Thanks!

I hope I win The Book.

I remember being at my grandmother’s house watching her cook. I don’t know how old I was, probably 3 or 4.

I had hernia surgery when I was 5 years old. I remember them asking me which perfume I wanted to smell, the Mickey Mouse or the Cinderella. I wasn’t falling for THAT! It was the ether they wanted me to smell. I haven’t trusted nurses since then.

My earliest childhood memory is going to the Philadelphia Zoo with my parents and younger sister. I was about 2 years old. We were looking at the porchipines and I was afraid of their quills. I have no idea why this memory has stayed with me. Must be something about my family being all together and very happy!

Getting my tonsils out when I was five. They made like it was a big deal for me to get to go with Dad to the hospital and I had to be quiet to keep from waking the other kids.

I remember visiting Soldier in a hospital with my mother and asking embarrising questions and my mother taking me away immediately. I was 4 years old.

I remember sitting in a narrow hallway below pantry shelves, on a hardwood floor, eating some sort of chocolate-flavored breakfast bar. My mom says this was our first Brooklyn apartment, and I was probably about 2 1/2 at the time.

my sister got candy to share with us while we were at school

My earliest childhood memory is probably when I was about 5 years old and I remember a small fire in my bedroom.

I remember walking home from Kindergarten. This was so long ago, that I was actually allowed to walk home all by myself. I remember hearing a voice out of nowhere and it was my grandmother who had passed away the year before. It didn’t scare me and I don’t remember what she said, but I always believed that she spoke to me.

I loved this book, my son loved this book, and now my grandkids love this book. I think my favorite childhood memory is of helping my mother in the kitchen.

growing up with my aunt who was younger than me. It was great

I remember Shel Silverstein when he was a cartoonist for Playboy in the ’50’s. I wonder if they are related.

I remember getting a little red doll bed as a child, such a wonderful memory.

My earliest memory is playing with my gloves for my uncle’s wedding…I was 2 1/2. I haven’t a clue why that memory stuck…it certainly wasn’t the most important part of that trip (we drove from KS to WA).

I have a vague memory from when my mom broke her ankle. I was, I think, about two…maybe two and a half. We were coming out of church, mom was carrying a box and she tripped. She must have fallen, but I don’t remember that. I just remember walking out to our little, orange pinto that was parked in the first or second spot, right near the door.
Not sure why that memory stuck. I don’t have any other memories from that time…probably not until at least a year later.
The memory doesn’t mean very much to do me. There’s really no emotion to it, just a few images. But it is kinda neat to have a memory from when I was that young.

My earliest childhood memory is age 4 standing in the backyard admiring the flowers and a bee landed on my finger and stung me. I ran inside so upset that looking at pretty flowers would get me hurt and my grandpa went out of his way to comfort and take care of me.

I remember garage saling with my granny. She used to buy me books at them and read them to me. I was around 4 at the time. I loved our time together. THank you for a great giveaway!
tatertot374@sbcglobal.net

Hope I win the book.
I was 6 and had a close friend at school. She told me that our neighbor was gone and wanted us to pick her strawberries so I went along and put them in my apron. The neighbor came out of the house and screamed at us and I was so scared. I hid my apron under my bed, and my Mother found it – blocked out the rest!

I remember my grandfather telling me long, elaborate and funny stories and always wanting more…..

Kindergarten, age 5, our classroom had a really cool little people sized pretend kitchen — I thought that was the best thing ever!

THANKS

My tonsillectomy and the misery associated with that.

I think this is the start of a lifelong love affair with books. i can remember going to the grocery store with my mother and she would buy me a little golden book for 10 cents. Does that date me or what? or going to the library with her.

I think my earliest memeory was in the crib ripping the plastic strips off of my bottle. They were the drop in kind with pull off sides.

If a Canadian non-blogger may enter, my earliest childhood memories are of climbing the stairs to go play on my parents’ bed. They had a waterbed, and there was a big mirror across from it. I was between one and two at the time (certainly no older as we moved to a different province when I was two and they left their waterbed behind). I have no idea why those memories stayed, and there’s nothing especially important about them, but it is kind of nice to have a few memories (however hazy) from that long ago.

I remember trying to open my bedroom window and the window sash fell on both my hands, trapping them. My Mom came to my resuce and helped release my hands. I can’t still remember it hurt really badly.

what a wonderful contest – thanks for posting!

going swimming with my dad and sisters and brothers around 3rd grade. We moved to a new house that had a pool and it was a big deal. Mom was always on the sidelines watching. Important because it was family time.

We didn’t have a lot of books but the one I just loved was a book about horses. Never did get a horse just reading about them.

I have two memories. one is of me biting my little brother and blaming the neighbor dog. the other is of me hiding under the sink and when my parents asked why I said I was hiding from God (I must have done something wrong). I’m not sure I actually remember these things or if the stories have just been told often enough that I think I remember them… 😉

thank you

OH, I would LOVE to win this for our future kiddo, who we hope to have next year 😀

My earliest childhood memory is going to the high school down the street to a football game with my parents, and stopping in the basement of the stadium to buy a coke with my dad. It was such an old memory that I thought it was a dream for a really long time, until I confirmed with my mom that it actually happened!

Thanks for hosting 😀

I remember chewing on my crib rail and waiting form mom to realize I was done with my nap. I have no clue how old I was.

I remember my mom reading stories to use before bed 🙂 She had this huge book of children Bible stories.

We love the giving tree so I can only imagine that we would love this one also. Getting in trouble for dumping the entire box of Cheerios in order to get at the prize.

My earliest childhood memories are “dancing” with crabs on the beach when my family lived in Florida. I was probably 4! Please enter me!

How strange…I just read some poems from this book to my son and he suggested we buy it for my nephew for his birthday. Wow! Now for your answers.

My earliest memory is when I was 4 yrs old. My grandfather would make his own wine from the grapes he grew in our yard and I would get a VERY small glass of my own out of the oak barrel when it was ready. Since my grandfather dies when I was 6 and a half, any and all memories of him are near and dear to me.

My earliest childhood memory is the birth of my little sister. I remember understanding that she was a new addition to the family, but I didn’t realize she would be staying for always. I thought she was simply a houseguest who would be leaving in a week. What a shock to find out I was wrong. I was quite young at the time, but I think that moment changed me because I became a big sister for the first and only time. Also, she and I became best friends quickly, even to this day, she is one of my very best friends.

Thanks so much for the lovely giveaway, i adore Shel Silverstein and remember reading this while sitting by my aunt’s bookshelf when I was young.

I RSS subscribed via Yahoo reader to A Novel Menagerie also.

My earliest memory was going down the big hill in the car to see “Big Mama” (my mother’s Grandmother). I don’t remember her, but I do remember driving to see her. This memory is important because at least I know I met her once!

Throwing up at school after eating black walnut cookies. I was in kindergarten (5 yrs old). Have never ate another one to this day.
Hope I am not warping my 4-year-olds brain by reading her Shel Silverstein. She thinks the poems are hilarious, though some are rather troubling.

I remember my first birthday and my mom sitting me in the highchair and putting the birthday cake in front of me. I started to cry because I thought she wanted me to eat the whole thing!

(Should I mention that I totally LOVE Where the Sidewalk Ends?)

I remember New Years Eve when I was 4 and all the adults were saying how fast the yr went, which I couldn’t believe because an hr to be was an eternity.

When I was around 2 years old my grandma started watching me so my mom could go to nursing school. I would go to her house each morning and watch Dumbo, play with all her childhood toys, and/or bake cookies with her. Our favorite cookies to bake were peanut butter. She also took me to the local college to see my g-pa often. And when I started preschool she would take me to get donuts a lot of mornings before school and I remember her taking me in the bathroom to wash my face before school.

We had a lot of fun and are still very close.

My earlies memory is ripping my pants on the playground and being scared that my mom would be so mad at me. It turns out my mom just said accidents happen! I was so releived. I would love to win this book to share with my son! Thanks for the chance.

Some of my earliest memories are visiting a great-uncle in the hospital when I was very small. I remember the walls were yellow and it smelled clean. I don’t know why that memory has stayed with me, maybe it’s the smell association? The memory is special because it’s a time when we lived in California and my grandma had a pool.

Thanks! foxsquirrelrabbit at gmail dot com

One of my earliest memories was being at my grandmas house making baked goods with her. I think I remember that particular thing because it was always fun over there.

I remember holding my baby brother when he came home from the hospital and thinking he was my baby. I was 16 months old. I’m sure I can remember it because we spent years together as playmates and that was the beginning.

I remember playing with my older brother and sister.

I remember playing a game with my mother involving a crumpled piece of paper. She would make up a letter that she “read” off the blank piece of paper that would be to me from one of my cousins. Then I would run over, grab the paper, and run to the corner where I would make up a letter for her. It felt like we played this game for hours, but it probably only lasted 2o minutes tops. I think I was two, because we were living in our “old” house.

I remember being pushed on a swing I was about 3 I think it stayed with be because it was a happy memory con5459(at)gmail(dot)com

I remember getting a stick stuck into the roof of my mouth. Actually it was a metal bar and I had to get it surgically removed. Very tramatizing. I still hate to go to the denist or have things in my mouth.

Here is my blog and I have the picture up with a link back.

I also will follow you via twitter and email

I remember being in a children’s hospital and being scared but then a REALLY nice nurse came and I felt better!!!

One of my earliest childhood memories was walking to the bus stop and worrying that my brain would not be able to hold all my memories for the rest of my life..I remember walking home and thinking, “I have to remember each day since I have so many more years to go!”

I would love the chance to win, thanks.

I remember living with my grandparents and helping my “Pa” burn old books in his room. They had an old house so there was one of those old black stoves in his room. It was cold in there and I loved being by the fire. I was 3.

I remember getting in trouble for coloring the white keys on our piano. Mom had me scrubbing them.

I remember all of my childhood loving to sleep over at my Grandma’s house because, she would open the windows when it was warm, and I would listen to hundreds of crickets chirping. It was so soothing to me. I lived in the city. I am now as an adult in the suburbs, and have crickets! Everytime I hear them, I think of my grandma. It brings such a peace to me.

PS. Shel Silversteen in my favorite author. My kids now love his books too, and my 9 year old daughter even has a poetry book where she writes his exact style of limericks! She just loves him.

I remember my sister who was five years older than me, making me sit and listen to her while she read to me. I was about three and she was reading Treasure Island, which I had no interest in.

It’s amazing that I grew up loving to read, because I hated having to sit and listen to her. And every time I’d try to sneak away, she’d catch me and drag me back.

Arghhh!

I remember when I was a kid, we were on recess playing basketball and someone pushed me forward and my front two teeth bit the metal basketball pole. I was about 8 or 9. I remember my dad coming to pick me up to take me to the dentist. Whenever I revisit the old school, I look at the old pole that is still there and I remember that day.

Yep, I would LOVE to win this!! Thanks for the chance.

THe one that stands out to me is when my little brother choked on a piece of candy that I had given him. It was scary and will stay with me forever. I have posted the whole story here.

My earliest memories are from elementary school, where I started to make friends that I kept for a long time.

When I was three, I think, the family car drove repeatedly around this circular road that had a statue on it. I remember it because it was so distinctive.

I remember when I was 10 going to the beach, it was amazing, but I got really afraid when I went out deeper into the water and a big wave knocked me down. I coughed up a bunch of saltwater blah! Thanks for the giveaway!

running around in the sprinkler

One of my earliest memories is jumping a chain link fence to take a shortcut through a school with my older sibling and getting chased by a janitor. My first introduction to lawbreaking by my sibs but certainly not my last.

I remember my parents leaving me with friends teenage children to go and see the movie jaws. I described the house exactly as i remembered it to my parents and their friends and we determined i was either 2 or 3. I have no idea why I remember this but it made me realize memories no matter how insignificant can be etched into out minds at a very early age.

My earliest childhood memory is brief images from my 4th birthday party. I remember playing on my new swingset.

Christmas when I was a little girl and received my metal dollhouse from Santa.

My favorite childhood memories are probably visiting my grandma.

My mother reading to me – every night she’d read the Golden Book of Poetry to us kids – “Baby Goes to Boston” was our all-time favorite

Great prize.

I was swinging on the backyard swing set–stark naked–singing at the top of my lungs!

I was 2 and I was in a crib writing on the wall. i remember it well because it was the first time i got punished

I remember helping my grandmother tend her garden and being amazed at the wonder of how Four O’clocks open at dusk, spreading their sweet scent.

Please enter me. Thanks!

Ironing my doll clothes and burning a hole in the linoleum floor with the iron. I was 2. I was not only a fast two year old I was smart, sort of. I’m surprised my mom didn’t have white hair before she was 30.

One of my earliest memories are of scooting around in my baby walker. I used to stay with my grandma during the day while my mom worked. My walker would fly thru her house. She always fixed bacon in the morning. I would race up to the stove while she was cooking and she’d give me a strip of bacon. Oh it was good! I think the taste and smell is why I have such a early memory like this, it’s great to think about. Makes my mouth water!

Here is my post: http://literatehousewife.com/2009/03/thursdays-thoughts-early-childhood-memories/. I am so excited about all of the comments here! Thanks to everyone who has participated!

I remember getting my first pair of saddle shoes. Oh, were those hard to keep clean. But they were to die for.

My earliest memory is waiting in my mother’s bed for her to get home. I found out later she had went to church. I must have been about 5. I guess these memories have stayed with me because of the love we had.

I remember being at my grandfather’s house and my cousin and I were chasing fireflies in the front yard. I must have been around 5 or 6 years old.

My earliest childhood memory is being with my grandmother when I was four years old. I think this memory stayed with me because she died when I was young so I don’t have many memories of her. It is an important memory to me because it reminds me that she loved me very much.

My earliest memory is at about 3 years old, of my grandmother, who passed away a year later, rubbing my back trying to put me to sleep when I was spending the night at her house.

I have a lot of memories that I was supposedly too young to remember. Playing in the yard, eating treats, things my mother said. Too many to pick just one, but I can remember things from when I was two.

I remember drinking coffee with my Grandmother when I was really young. She’d drink coffee mid-morning and read at the kitchen table and I insisted on drinking coffee so mine would be 3/4 milk and 1/4 coffee.

I remember when I fell and broke my arm when I was 4. It really isn’t that important.

I have tons of memories of when I was three (we moved as I turned 4 so I know memories in that house are 3 or younger but I don’t know which was the earliest.

I remember getting in trouble in kindergarten because a girl brought a makeup kit in and we were supposed to be napping but instead, three of us were pretending to lay down, but playing with makeup.

I absolutely love this book and I really hope I win it for my keeper shelf. It’s one I can enjoy with my kids for years to come. Thanks so much.

I can remember playing dolls with my older sister. I wasn’t in school, yet, so I was probably around 4. My children loved these books. Would like to win this one for my little granddaughter. Thanks for having the contest!

i remember a lot from my childhood. i remember when i was 8, the neighborhood kids and i would ride our bikes everyday after school. life back then wasn’t what it’s like anymore…i miss those days and cherish them forever!

i left a comment on Jennifer’s blog!

Eatting watermelon with my brother and sister on the see-saw in the backyard.. not the earliest memory but my favorite because a few years later my sister was killed in a car accident…. Gotta love happy moments

I don’t have a lot of happy memories or many at all from my childhood but……I think it would be churning butter in grade school. Our teacher had us take turns and it was something I had never seen before….it was a lot of fun.

One of my earliest memories is of jumping on a old mattress in our playroom. I loved jumping up and down and falling on the mattress. I think that’s why it’s so hard to get cranky with my daughter when she jumps on the bed–I’d still do it if my ceilings were higher!

My second fondest memory is of looking out our hallway window across the river to the “big” city! I thought to myself, this must be what it looks like in Madeline’s Paris! http://tinyurl.com/bhra4t

Thanks for reminding me of these great memories!

I’ve also posted on Jennifer’s blog!

My earliest memory is getting in trouble at preschool when I was about 4 for talking when I was not supposed to. I am now the director of a preschool. THank you

Happy Weekend!
